      <description>Optimum Biometric Labs CEO Mr Babak Goudarzi Pour will chair the public/end-users panel on the 2nd EBF/JRC Research Seminar in Brussels.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Key new policies on future research in biometrics relating to the large scale implementation of passports, visas and ID card programmes to provide for a safer and more secure Europe will be discussed by leading policymakers from the European Commission at the 2nd Research Seminar in Brussels on Wednesday, 4 October, co-hosted by the European Biometrics Forum (EBF) and the European Commissions Joint Research Centre (JRC).&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The theme of the Seminar is ‘Requirements for a Safer Europe: Implications for European R&amp;amp;D in Biometrics’. The event will bring together experts from four key sectors, Policy, Research, Industry and Public/Users to discuss future research projects in Europe, current implementations of biometric projects and issues arising from these implementations such as privacy matters and conformity to international standards.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The European Commission's Jacques Bus, Herbert Von Bose, Alois Sieber, Frank Paul and Gûnter Schumacher will all address the Seminar. Marek Rejman-Greene from the UK’s Home Office and Peter Schaar, the German Data Protection Commissioner will also speak at the event.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The one day seminar on will be looked at from the perspective of four different sectors&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;* The policy panel will look at the current status of European large scale id-management systems and how issues such as interoperability, conformity and standards are working in practice.&lt;br/&gt;* The research panel will examine the best methods to promote and facilitate the development of world-class R&amp;amp;D, performance evaluation and standards.&lt;br/&gt;* The industry panel will discuss how industry can facilitate the development of a strong and competitive market in the European Union’ and&lt;br/&gt;* The public/end-users panel will look at the impact of biometrics enabled ID-management systems on civil rights. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Meanwhile, the European Biometrics Forum is delighted to announce the final of the EBF European Biometric Research Award 2006, a prestigious award which will be made annually to an individual who has been judged by a panel of internationally respected experts to be making a significant contribution to the field of biometrics research in Europe. Three talented PhD students will present their Research Paper to the audience at the Seminar and a winner will be announced subsequently.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Dr Alois Sieber from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre said “ This important research event provides a unique opportunity for all sectors of the biometrics community to be updated on relevant R&amp;amp;D projects and ongoing implementations in members states”.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Max Snijder, CEO of the EBF commented; “Research is critical for the future development of biometrics, especially now that the end user requirements are becoming more evident.
